July 30, 2003Peru As A Soap Opera (A Quick History)
Personal Ad: Who I Am/What I'm Looking For: Former Peruvian President Seeks Like Minded Country For Illegal Aquisition Of Public and Private Funds To Build My Modest 150 Acre, 5-Storey Country Home. Turn Ons: A Trusting People, And Rampant Economic Unrest. Turn Offs: The IMF, And People Who Hold Grudges. P.S. Please Send Picture With Inquiry, As Well As Pin Numbers And Vault Combinations To Country's Banks. "Hey! There's a poor country! I think I'll rob it blind!" - Fujimori Peru as a Soap Opera Racial minority President, Alberto Fujimori (Japanese descent), was elected in 1990. (Hoorah for diversity!) The beginning of his presidency saw a betterment of the economy and a curb to the then common guerilla insurgences. At the time, Peru glanced over a horizon where economic and political stability could be seen as a coming event. In Fujimori’s third term as president however, he was found to be illegally liberating the optimistic Peruvian peoples earnings from the country’s banks. (Boo for thievery!) Currently, Fujimori is enjoying political asylum on his large, poor-Peruvian funded, estate in Japan. Now-President Alejandro Toledo is under domestic and international pressure to clean up Peru’s seemingly status-quo political corruption.
